Golfgiving

An annual pilgrimage the weekend before Thanksgiving to the hallowed grounds of Pinehurst, the cradle of American golf. This tradition features a friendly yet competitive three-round tournament, balanced with evening celebrations, shared accommodations, and the camaraderie that only comes from good friends enjoying great golf, fine drinks, and memorable stories around the 19th hole

Golfgiving Eve

Thursday, November 20th

 

  • Early departure: 8 players will travel and stay between DC and Pinehurst to limit Friday morning travel

 

  • Travel Tips:
    • The drive from DC to Pinehurst is approximately 5-6 hours
    • Consider stopping in Raleigh for a meal break (~1 hour from Pinehurst)

    Day 1 - Teams

    Friday, November 21st

    • Round 1: Talamore Golf Course
      • Tee Times: 10:48, 10:57, 12:45, 12:54
      • Practice facility includes driving range, putting green, and short game area
      • Course Details: Par 71, 6,840 yards from back tees, designed by Rees Jones
      • Known for its strategic layout with challenging bunkers and undulating greens
    • Format: Best 6 net scores of the 8 on each team
      • We will take the best 6 net scores from each team and add them up each hole
      • 3 points are up for grabs: 1 front 9, 1 back 9, 1 overall
      • Remember to record all scores accurately for handicap purposes
    • Check-in to accommodations after round

     

    • Evening:
      • Introductions and move in
      • Dinner on your own
      • Night out in Southern Pines
      • Recommended spots: The Bell Tree (casual pub), Ironwood Café (good for groups), Southern Pines Brewing Company (craft beers)

      Day 2 - Best Ball

      Saturday, November 22nd

      • Tee Time: Legacy Golf Links
        • 7:57-8:24
        • Suggested arrival: 7:30AM for warm-up and strategy discussion with partner
      • Format: 4-Ball
        • 3 points available in each match
        • 2v2 Best ball
        • Take the best NET score between you and your partner
        • NOT additive, just one score matters
        • Strategy tip: Communicate with your partner about aggressive vs. conservative play
      • Evening:
        • Golfgiving Dinner (Get those ugly sweaters out!)
        • Gift Exchange
          • Secret Santa
          • Rules HERE
          • Party Time
          • Reminder: Pace yourself for tomorrow’s singles matches!

      Day 3 - Singles

      Sunday, November 23rd

      • Tee Time: Bayonete at Puppy Ridge
        • Tee Times:  9:30-10:00AM
        • Singles matches – confirm your opponent
        • Don’t forget to exchange scorecards with your opponent
        • Pre-round hydration is key to Sunday performance!
      • Format: Singles
        • 1v1 Nassau Format (front 9, back 9, overall)
        • 3 points in each match
        • Award presentation to winning team immediately following final match
      • Post Round: Optional visit to Pinehurst Resort for Thistle Du
        • Putting Contest commences
        • Entry fee: $10 per person (winner takes all)
        • Thistle Du is one of the country’s premier putting courses
        • Great photo opportunity at the iconic Putter Boy statue
      • Note: Some participants may choose to depart after Sunday’s round
        • Travel time to Raleigh-Durham airport: ~75 minutes

        Bonus Content

        Monday, November 24th

        • Check-out
        • OPTIONAL: Round at Tobacco Road around 9:00 AM (not included in package price)
          • Tobacco Road is a Mike Strantz signature design – one of America’s most unique courses
          • Difficulty level: Challenging – bring extra balls!
          • Green fee approximately $250/player (cart included)
          • Known for dramatic elevation changes and optical illusions
        • Return home
          • Gas stations available near US-1 for fill-ups before the drive
          • Consider traffic patterns: DC area gets congested after 3:00 PM
          • Sunday return options also available for those who need to be back earlier
